Third Thursday Lecture Series

February 2011

Happy Valentines Day!

On Thursday, February 17, we'll have the next installment of the Third Thursday Lecture Series, at the Mandarin Community Club, 12447 Mandarin Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32223. For the month of love, we will talk about the birds and the bees. Actually just bees-honey bees. Please join us for something sweet. The doors will open at 6:30 and the lecture will begin at 7 p.m.

Sincerely,

Andrew Morrow

Life and Times of Honey Bees

This month's lecture will be conducted by beekeeper George DeMarino. DeMarino will speak about the lives of honey bees and cover their social structure, interaction and importance to people.  A fifteen minute video will be shown.

DeMarino said he has been fascinated by bees since he was seven years old and watched beekeeping demonstrations at the Topfields Agriculture Fair in his native Massachusetts.  He  kept bees for 17 years in New England and New York. He is a member of the North East Florida Honey Bee Association and the Jacksonville Beekeeper Association.  DeMarino has conducted numerous lectures on honey bees at area garden clubs, schools and libraries.

DeMarino has lived in Jacksonville for eleven years. He has been a certified master gardener for eight years and oversees the gardens at the Walter Jones Historical Park.
